WORK on a $22.5 million Coast sporting hub is set to begin with ground expected to be turned in coming weeks.

A new high-performance gym, O2 Performance, will be the main tenant for the first stage of the Birtinya development.

Sunshine Coast Community and Sporting Club director Darryl Van de Velde said the milestone was significant, considering discussions for the centre began about three or four years ago.

“It is full steam ahead now,” Mr Van de Velde said.

The $9 million first stage of the sports hub at the intersection of Main Drive and Sportsmans Parade will include the gym, a hyperbaric chamber and specialist treatment practices.

About 80 per cent of the available tenancies have already been leased with the first stage to be built by the end of the year or early next year.

The next stage of the project will include three-and-a-half star accommodation of 67 rooms to house visiting sports teams and carnival guests.
